Teeth Whitening

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is one of the simplest and most affordable ways to improve the appearance of your smile. Professional teeth whitening treatments at our dentist’s office are the most effective and can be performed within just one hour using a special bleaching agent.

Tooth enamel is made up of microscopic pores that can hold stains. These stains can be from coffee, tea, wine, soft drinks, or just about anything that stains a white piece of clothing. Certain foods, such as blueberries and soy sauce, can also discolor your teeth.

Professional Teeth Whitening

Professional teeth whitening uses a whitening gel with a stronger concentration of carbamide peroxide than those of at-home whitening kits. The gel is usually applied directly to the teeth and is exposed to a special light that activates the gel. The gel breaks down stains and brightens the teeth. The concentration of the gel used during professional teeth whitening is usually 15% or higher, but it also depends on the severity of the stains.

Take-Home Whitening Trays

Your dental professional will take an impression of your teeth and will make custom whitening trays for you to wear at home. The trays hold the whitening solution in place, soaking your teeth while protecting your gums from the solution. To whiten your teeth at home, you will wear the trays with the whitening solution over your teeth for about 30 minutes to one hour a day.

Over-the-Counter Teeth Whitening

Over-the-counter whitening products contain low concentrations of peroxide, so they aren’t as strong as professional-grade whitening products. Over-the-counter whitening products can take up to a month to produce results, and they often only remove surface stains. They don’t usually change the color of crowns, veneers, or fillings.

Please note that professional teeth whitening uses higher concentrations of peroxide than over-the-counter products do, so it whitens your teeth much faster. Your dentist should be able to whiten your teeth up to ten shades lighter in just one office visit.

Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

Yes, teeth whitening is safe when performed under the supervision of a dental professional. In fact, many dentists offer teeth whitening in their practice. The product contains ingredients that safely break down stains, leaving your teeth whiter.
